NOVA Military Family Resources

Military families face many challenges when it comes to frequent moves, varying academic requirements, and other stressors that relate to change. The all-volunteer Military Families Committee of the NOVA District PTA has taken a team approach to researching what information would best benefit inbound families and look forward to expanding the resources. Please note that these resources are an evolving body of work and completely volunteer-created – questions or constructive suggestions for alteration are welcome. The Military Families committee strives to work together to create resources, community, and advocate for our military families through our shared commitment and with our PTA councils and local units. Our committee looked through each school district within our PTA district and coordinated resources for hopefully easy access. Contact to learn more and to volunteer.

The public school districts represented by the NOVA District PTA are Alexandria City, Arlington County, City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, and Falls Church City. Commonwealth of Virginia & Department of Defense

There are several resources applicable to all school districts within the Commonwealth of Virginia and the DOD.

Virginia Department of Education Quality Profiles – Provides, “information about student achievement, college and career readiness, program completion, school safety, teacher quality and other topics of interest to parents and the general public. Report cards are available for schools, school divisions and for the commonwealth.”

VA DOE Purple Star Designation – this recognition is awarded to schools that show a consistent commitment to military students and families. In addition, this website provides information for military families in transition as well as other guidelines and regulations applicable to the population.

MIC3: The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission addresses key educational transition issues encountered by military families including enrollment, placement, attendance, eligibility and graduation.

School Liaison Officers (SLO) – Note: Families do not have to be assigned to the installation to utilize the SLO. There are several SLOs in the area, based at Fort Belvoir and Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall.
