NORTHERN VIRGINIA DISTRICT PTA AWARD ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

Congratulations to Parklawn Elementary PTA!

From over 1,000 schools across the nation, Parklawn Elementary School PTA in Fairfax County, NOVA District PTA, was selected by National PTA to receive support in hosting a Family Reading Experience this March!

In celebration of National Reading Month, National PTA will provide financial support towards the purchase of food, decorations and reading station supplies. Free take-home packets will also be provided to attending families. National PTA and education leaders will help kick-off the evening of fun family reading activities, and sponsor Kindle, has a surprise planned!  Congratulations again to Parklawn ES PTA!

VA PTA Membership Advanced Award Recipient!

Congratulations to the Reston Montessori School PTA, Northern Virginia District, winner of Virginia PTA’s 2016/17 Advanced Dues Award. The award is given to a PTA/PTSA in good standing which submitted dues before November 2nd.  All were entered into a raffle and Reston Montessori was chosen from 162 PTA/PTSAs. Donna Colombo, VP Membership and Debbie Kilpatrick, Northern Virginia District Director presented a $50.00 Visa Gift Card and they will receive their awards certificate at the Virginia PTA Annual Conference in Richmond, July 13-15, 2017. Check out more membership awards your PTA/PTSA might be eligible for!

VIRGINIA PTA STUDENT AWARDS:

Time Is Running Out for the Power Plates Student Recipe Challenge!  Students – Get out your aprons and healthy recipes as you only have a few more days to submit your entry for the Virginia PTA Power Plates program. Power Plates encourages students to practice healthy eating habits by submitting their recipes. It is open to students from grade pre-kindergarten through grade 12. There are five categories: breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner entrée or side dish, and dessert. Visit the Power Plates page for the official rules and entry form, deadline is next week February 24.

Apply for Virginia PTA Scholarships NOW!  Each year Virginia PTA offers scholarships to graduating seniors from Virginia schools with a PTSA in good standing. Scholarships are based on a demonstrated commitment to and engagement in, community service, academic achievement and financial need. Let your graduating seniors know the deadline to submit their scholarship applications to Virginia PTA is Monday, March 1, 2017. Visit Scholarship Page

NOVA DISTRICT PTA AWARDS SUBMISSION BY MARCH 1:

Do you have a special teacher or staff member that you would like to honor? A Principal that supports and promotes your PTA/PTSA? A dedicated Volunteer that consistently goes above and beyond to support your PTA?  Has your PTA/PTSA had a great year with many successes and accomplishments?  All award applications are available online for download at district web site.

Please apply for one of the District awards by March 1 so your nominees can be recognized at our District Annual Meeting Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 30, Clausen Hall, Annandale HS.

Registration form with guest speakers, menu, and schedule is attached and was mailed to each PTA/PTSA so please check your school’s main office for the envelope!

DUES REMINDER:  Next Virginia PTA Membership Dues Deadline is March 1, 2017. Membership is a year round initiative. Let your members know how important they are and always accept members throughout the year. Submit membership dues to Virginia PTA, 1027 Wilmer Avenue, Richmond, VA 23227 and email updated members list to membershiplist@vapta.org. Your PTA may qualify for one of our membership awards. Remember, we calculate memberships based on the March 1st totals! So, get those dues in now! Need ideas for another membership drive to complete the year or if you are planning next year, contact vpmembership@vapta.org.

COMMUNITY EVENTS:  NOVA District is pleased to share the upcoming events open to all of our Northern Virginia PTA members!

March 2 FCCPTA Diversity Conference, Annandale HS Clausen Hall, 6-9 p.m.:  Supporting Diverse Students with Disabilities in the Classroom with Resources presented by the U.S. Department of Education.  Light Dinner, Child Care available, and Education Credit Hours offered.  Event is free, but registration is required. March 11, 2017 Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Burke, 9:30 am – 2:00 pm:  Students are the change-makers in school food!  The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo features student culinary teams creating lunches, breakfasts and snacks that could be selected for the menu in Fairfax County Public Schools. $15 registration includes a Public Tasting, two chef demonstrations or expert-led workshops, lunch, awards and prize drawings.
