The NOVA District PTA held its 2020 Annual Meeting/Awards Celebration on May 26 to wrap up its business for the 2019-2020 school year, elect new officers for the 2020-2022 term, and celebrate the achievements and successes of its leaders, members, students, and families throughout the Northern Virginia region. Attendees of the virtual event included various state and local public officials and officers from the Virginia PTA. Attendees were also able to engage with the event’s special guest speaker – Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn – about important issues impacting Virginia students and families, including access to quality mental health services and resources.
NOVA District PTA congratulates its newest officers for the 2020-2022 term:

- Debbie Kilpatrick – Assistant Director
- Jason Morgan – Secretary/Treasurer
NOVA District PTA appreciates the diligent efforts of its former officers – Debbie Kilpatrick, Director; Tony Shivers, Assistant Director; and Denise Bolton, Secretary/Treasurer – to accomplish the PTA mission throughout the Northern Virginia region.
Donna Colombo, President, Virginia PTA underscored the challenges that Virginia students and families face during the current pandemic, but that the Virginia PTA is committed to its mission – To make every child’s potential a reality. The Virginia PTA will continue to provide opportunities for students and families to learn to be effective advocates for themselves before various elected officials as well as provide opportunities for them to advocate. The Virginia PTA has also developed a webpage for Virginia students and families to get various resources, including distanced learning and quality mental health resources – https://www.vapta.org/families/covid-19.
NOVA District PTA celebrated the achievements of its student award winners that competed in the Virginia PTA Scholarship Program, Virginia PTA Citizenship Essay Program, and National PTA Reflections Program. It also recognized and celebrated the achievements of its various council and local PTAs/PTSAs as well as their individual leaders and members, including their work in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) and the commitment towards volunteerism to positively impact their students, schools, families, and communities.
Dr. Scott Brabrand, Superintendent, Fairfax County Public Schools, congratulated all the awardees and emphasized the importance of the PTA to ensure students and their families thrive at school and at home.
Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn highlighted the event with a summary of achievements during the 2020 Virginia General Assembly Session, including passage of gun-violence prevention and school safety legislation. NOVA District PTA and the House Speaker agreed to continue these types of discussions to ensure students and families are regularly updated and for the House Speaker to remain informed about what is happening on the ground in specific communities throughout Northern Virginia.
