Successful STEM+Families Night at Parklawn ES in Alexandria

Parklawn ES PTA, a National PTA School of Excellence, held a science festival for its students and families on September 18 to kick off the start of its 2019-2020 school year that drew close to 400 people, including local elected officials and board members from the Fairfax County Council of PTAs, NOVA District PTA, Virginia PTA, and the National PTA.

The science festival featured several stations where Parklawn ES students and families were able to conduct various science experiments, including flying rockets (see below for pictures)! It was a great opportunity for students and families to learn about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to the global economy and about the limitless opportunities awaiting them during and after high school graduation. PTA’s vision is that all students have the family and community support needed to access and pursue STEM opportunities and careers.

The science festival was made possible through a STEM+Families Program grant by the National PTA through its partnership with the Bayer USA Foundation. The National PTA provides grant opportunities for its PTAs/PTSAs throughout the year. Interested PTAs/PTSAs can monitor and apply for various funding opportunities at https://www.pta.org/home/run-your-pta/Awards-Grants.

Parklawn ES PTA is just one of the many PTAs/PTSAs across Northern Virginia working to accomplish the PTA mission – To make every child’s potential a reality.

Please share the great work you are doing for your students, families, and schools with the NOVA District PTA so it can promote your success!
