NOVA District PTA attends 2019 National PTA Reflections Student Arts Showcase

NOVA District PTA leadership and members attended the 2019 National PTA Student Arts Showcase at the U.S. Department of Education on January 22. The Showcase recognized and celebrated the winners of the 2017-2018 National PTA National Reflections Program in dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, visual arts and photography. The theme of the 2017-2018 Reflections program was “Within Reach” and the National PTA received over 300,00 entries from students all across the nation. There were several winners from the Commonwealth of Virginia, including the Northern Virginia region. Young Mister Eric Poor from Waples Mill ES PTA in Oakton won an award in dance choreography. Mr. Poor also performed during the 2018 National PTA Annual Convention and Expo in New Orleans.

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was on hand to congratulate the young winners and emphasized the importance of arts education to ensure our nation’s students are ready for the global economy.

The National PTA National Reflections Program is the oldest and largest nationally recognized arts recognition program in the nation celebrating 50 years. The U.S. Department of Education has hosted the winning works of art from the program for over 15 years (notice the number of cut red ribbons around the poles!). The theme for 2018-2019 is “Heroes Around Me”. The 2018-2019 national winners will be announced  on May 1, 2019 and honorees will be celebrated at the 2019 National PTA Annual Convention and Expo in Columbus, Ohio scheduled for June 20-23.
